Blessed Lugia, there are so many of them," Talia whispered in awe as she floated over the water route, her Dragonair calmly gliding over the sea with ease. "Do you suppose they do this every year?"

Countless Corsola had begun their trek to Route 129, and this here -- in Route 128 -- was the final leg of their voyage. Until now, precious few things had gotten in the way of safeguarding the pink Water-type Pokemon, and Talia believed a large reason for that was her partner, Locke Jamison.

Somewhat shyly, Talia glanced over her shoulder to see him with his own Water-type Pokemon, which seemed much more suited to the surroundings than her own. The nerves inherent to working with a new person warred with her desire to befriend and to chatter, the latter ultimately winning out as she continued in earnest, "I don't think I ever saw anything like it in Johto, at least. It's wonderful to look at, isn't it?"

Locke couldn’t help briefly lifting their gaze from their phone to cast a wary glance upwards. There was nothing blessed about Hoenn’s Lugia.

It was only an expression, however, and the skies were clear of clouds and corrupted legendaries alike.

Their own serpentine Pokémon flicked a bit of seawater at his trainer, as though sensing the beginnings of another anxious spiral and banishing it in its infancy. It was a nice day, the Miltoic seemed to imply, enjoy it.

Or maybe Fee-fee had simply felt like getting them wet.

With a huff, Locke rubbed the salty droplets from his cheek and returned to the task at hand; or at least, taking photos of the task at hand. ”They do,” he finally answered. ”I have change my delivery route to go around them every time they migrate. Never thought I’d end up delivering them instead.

”We had a pod pass through Vermilion on their way to the Sevii islands from Cinnabar,” he continued between clicks of the camera app. ”My grandmother loves them, so Pop-Pop would take her out on his old dinghy every year to watch em.” The memory brought a smile to his face. If there was one silver lining in his family’s abrupt separation, the islands of Alola had a booming Corsola population that Nana could enjoy year-round.

She still appreciated her grandson’s photos of the Hoenn variants though.

The brief, quizzical look on Locke Jamison's face resulted in Talia biting her lower lip, her eyebrows furrowing together in self-reproach. This isn't Johto. Lugia doesn't mean the same thing here. Your myths are just stories, Talia. They're not real.

The turquoise-haired woman smoothed out her brow with an exhale, however, choosing to focus on happier matters. Which proved easy, given the way the other trainer's Pokemon playfully splashed them both with water. Talia giggled, belatedly covering her mouth with her sleeve, before looking at Lyra with an eyebrow raised as if to ask, 'Why aren't you playing with me?' Alas, the Dragonair was far too dignified to be so distracted from her single-minded task, and Talia pouted at her teasingly. "You're no fun, Lyra," she whispered, and the dragon dutifully ignored her young mistress's complaint.

As Locke spoke about his work, however, Talia's attention was wholly drawn away from her regal Dragonair, the girl's eyes bright with clear interest. "Delivery route?" she repeated. "What do you deliver, then, if not usually Corsola?" It fascinated her, how many roles people had to play in Hoenn. The more work she did with the League, the more Talia felt she got to understand the civilians she was protecting. This felt just as important, to her at least.

"The Sevii Islands!" Talia exclaimed as her partner talked about his family. "Oh, I have never been, but the photography I have seen is lovely. What a truly wonderful memory to have. Do you miss it there?" So sincere was her curiosity that only a moment too late did it occur to her that such a question might be tactless -- Kanto was not a topic that would be considered pleasant conversation for most.

"If you don't mind talking about it, that is," she added hurriedly, a hot flush reddening her cheeks.

LLocke flashed Talia Celes a wide smile. ”We deliver anything! ‘Through rain, sleet, or wormhole,’ right Fee-Fee?” His Milotic replied with a cheerful cry, which made a few of the Corsola that had been lagging behind scurry up towards the rest of the swarm.

His cheer didn’t last long, however, realizing his previous slip only after his companion had begun to pry. In fairness, his home region was hardly a secret. If he let his accent drop even a bit, anyone could guess where he was from. But there was good reason for him to avoid bringing it up in casual conversation.

And there it was.

The pity.

Just like that, their nostalgia curdled into a sour feeling deep in their gut, poisoning the memory until they were forced to push it back into the corners of their mind. They shifted uncomfortably for a bit, before breathing out a calming sigh and putting on their most polite smile.

”I only got to visit the islands for a few hours at a time over the summers while I helped my dad drop off fish, so I never got to see much past the docks.” They paused for a couple beats after that though, chewing on the question.

”…I miss the food.”

Talia enjoyed listening to Locke Jamison pleasantly chatter about their delivery work. There were perhaps few greater joys in all the world for her than in basking in another's happiness. "Rain, sleet, or wormhole!" she exclaimed with delight. "Well done, Fee-Fee."

The shift in topic, however, struck like a single out-of-tune note in an otherwise sweet symphony, discordant and awkward as the flow of conversation abruptly dried up.

A jolt of anxious guilt coursed through Talia at the notion that she had invited this misstep, and all of her energy went instantly towards righting it. If a dancer was deft enough, they knew how to flawlessly respond to a change in melody, no matter how unexpected. Talia secretly hoped she was following the correct rhythm of this one.

"I miss the food in Johto, too," she said, her hands winding themselves around Lyra's slender neck like an embrace. "It's not the same here, even when I go to the restaurants that supposedly sell Ecruteak City cuisine. The yatsuhashi isn't as good here, though you can sometimes find some in the Slateport nightmarket. My mom and I used to make rice balls together, though, and the pickled plum ones were always my favorite."

The Corsola beneath them continued in their steady crawl towards the end of the blue horizon, pink and glittering in the sea spray. Talia's gaze turned from them to Locke Jamison and she asked earnestly, "What food was your favorite?"

Locke nodded in agreement, happy to move the conversation along. ”The berries here are so small too,” he complained. ”One of our neighbors back home grew Eggants the size of your head, all in his backyard! My grandma taught me how to make em into a sauce to put on just about every kind of Magikarp dish you can think of.

”My favorite though…hmmm…” They closed their eyes in deep though, almost as though they were trying to summon the taste to their tongue. ”I used to sweep the floors and porch of a little bodega on the docks after school. The pork buns there were always real popular with the workers, and they sold quick, but the owner always saved me one and gave it to me with my pay to eat on the way home. I’ve tried some of the bodega buns around here, but hers was always the best.”

They didn’t bring up that they liked the pork buns so much because any meat outside of fish was hard to come by in their house, or that those and the free lunches at school were the only hot meals they could get some days.

”Her Purrloin was also really cute, even though it always tried to steal my bun.”

"Oh, that sounds heavenly," Talia agreed, her mind's eye now filled with the picture of the seasoned Magikarp and the delightful sauces. Did Corsola eat Magikarp? She wondered.

As Locke continued talking, Talia shut her eyes to imagine the bodega and the docks, the smells conjured by the imagery making her terribly hungry. "How wonderful," she murmured, smiling at the story of the sneakily hidden pork buns. "My aunties at the dance studio where I worked were all so proud of their cooking. They'd argue over who was better at this or that, and we'd sometimes get to eat and break ties. It was stressful because you didn't want to offend anyone!" Lowering her voice, turning her head to and fro as if conveying a great secret, Talia then whispered, "But it was delicious."

The Ranger giggled, the memory bringing to mind silly squabbles she hadn't dwelled on in a long time.

"Did you ever give one of your buns to the Purrloin, or was the poor thing always left hungry?" she teased.

"That sounds like fun though," he refocused the conversation. "I didn't have much of an extended family to share recipes with back home. Dad could cook, but he was out at sea a lot so it was mostly just me and Nana in the kitchen. Our whole neighborhood was pretty close though, lots of potlucks and barbeques and stuff, ya know?"

Almost never planned, as far as he could recall. Someone would start grilling and strike up a conversation with their neighbor until someone else came along to join in, and soon enough everyone on the block would be bringing fresh fruits and vegetables and tupperwares full of leftovers.

Talia tilted her head skyward, letting the breeze run its invisible fingers through her long blue hair as she listened. "Some of the best family is chosen family," the Ranger agreed as cloudy rings of cirrus crumbled around them.

"Potlucks, barbeques, and other events like that... I quite like them. Any time you can get other people together, I think, is worthwhile. I didn't know anyone when I came to Hoenn, but I've been grateful for the opportunities the Rangers have given me to meet others."

They were united by duty alone, perhaps, but that was a strong enough tie to build many foundations upon, Talia had found.

Below them, the Corsola had almost reached their desired location, their pink bodies glistening in the seafoam.
